The pure childish pleasure of playing the guitar is the essence of our enthusiasm.
Make that enthusiasm the driving force in your practice.
The hours of work will become a joy for yourself and you will give greater pleasure to those that hear you play.
This picture is a portrait of me done by my nephew when he was about 5 years old, and it expresses how I like to feel while I study the guitar.

自述在格莱美奖上如何哭鼻子:
Dear friends,
We are still over the moon about the grammy award. We are so full of joy that we feel like sharing our experience with you.
This is what happened:
When David was nominated in the beginning we were thrilled. We decided that we would go to L.A. to the ceremony just for fun thinking that he had very little chance of winning, considering the greatness of the other four musicians in his category.
By luck we were sitting in the first row, dressed handsomely and enjoying the ceremony, while being nervous and anxious inside... Then the moment came.
FOR BEST INSTRUMENTAL SOLOIST PERFORMANCE THE NOMINATIONS ARE:
AIRE LATINO
David Russell
DEBUSSY: IMAGES; ÉTUDES
Pierre-Laurent Aimard
PLETNEV PLAYS SCHUMANN
Mikhail Pletnev
SHOSTAKOVIC: PIANO WORKS
Vladimir Ashkenazy
YSAYE: SONATAS FOR VIOLIN SOLO, OPUS 27
Thomas Zehetmair
The man on stage said:
AND THE GRAMMY GOES TO...
He opened the envelop and...
AIRE LATINO
David Russell ...
We were holding hands at this point...
David jumped off his chair and on stage he was in a jump...
He was given the Grammy award and he started his acceptance speech:
I am overwhelmed...
And on my seat, I couldn't stop crying... I couldn't believe it.
We honestly never talked about the possibility of winning the award and, when it happened, we felt as if we had hit the jackpot (not knowing necessarily how we would feel in that case, as it never happened to us: the jackpot).
We arrived home after two days of celebrations, and our friends came to the airport with banners and all the TV cameras and local newspapers were there to greet us... It was an unbelievable welcoming home feeling...
We just feel like sharing our happiness with everybody...
Our best wishes to everyone,
David and Maria.

Grammy guitarist is commanding presence
Guitarists may appear to lead lonely lives, but David Russell couldn't have felt forlorn when he played a recital Saturday at Ford Auditorium in the Allen Memorial Medical Library. Russell's fans were out in abundance to cheer the recent winner of a Grammy (just last month for his "Aire Latin Latin Music for Guitar" recording from Beachwood-based Telarc).
Russell had no trouble capturing the ears of Saturday's audience with an eclectic program stamped with his poetic elegance.
Everything he played sounded captivating. Russell speaks musically in a songful, delicate voice that draws colors and nuances from the music that a listener might not have thought were there. He employs subtlety of tone and expressive contrast to bring a composer's thoughts to vivid life.
Russell is a quietly commanding performer both in musical and technical terms.
Russell didn't stint on Spanish sources. He brought out the earthy and charming qualities in four pieces by Regino Sainz de la Maza. The flamboyant dance gestures in three miniatures by Emilio Pujol exuded panache.

SUPREME GUITARIST
I have heard in concert Andrés Segovia, Yepes... and all the best guitarists of the 20th century. None of those concerts were like the one David Russell offered in the Teatro Jovellanos for the Philharmonic Society. Russell, like good wines, gets better with the time, becomes stronger and more perfect. Before an enthusiastic audience, he offered a sublime recital.
Russell is the indisputable maestro of the classical guitar, the synthesis of Segovia's school with the best English school of Julian Bream, enriched with an exceptional sense of colour and musicality. He is friendly both in his manner and in his touch. With naturalness, almost simplicity, but with an absolute knowledge of the guitar, he displayed a wonderful programme.
A marvelous recital on the guitar of a charming performer, David Russell.
